[Video] SmartBird – Robot That Flies Like A Real Bird By Flapping Wings

Well, you must have seen plenty of robots before this one that have the ability to fly. The Aeroplane is one of them. So, what’s the big deal about this Bird robot? Well, out of all the robots that fly, none can fly like a real bird by flapping it’s wings.

Scientist Markus Fischer and his team at Festo (leading world-wide supplier of automation technology) has built SmartBird – a large, lightweight robot, modeled on a seagull, that flies just by mechanically flapping its wings and nothing else. The robot works so perfectly that it is hard distinguish it from the real bird, when it flies.

The SmartBird, which weighs just 450 grams, has a 64 bit processor on-board and is controlled by a radio handset. The robot can also simply glide through the skies if left to its own devices. Here is another video showing the SmartBird flying in the sky.
