China Builds World’s Fastest Super Computer

Today China has unveiled the world’s fastest super computer – the Tianhe-1A.

The Tianhe-1A which reportedly cost $88 Millions to build can do 2.507 pentaflops (or 2.507 quadrillion calculations per second). It is now faster that the Cray XT5 Jaguar which can do 2.3 pentaflops.

The supercomputer, which is built by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in China, will be used for oil-exploration, bio-medical research and design of aerospace vehicles.

The 2.507 pentaflops is achieved through the use of 7,168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 graphics processor units (GPUs) and 14,336 Intel Xeon central processing units (CPUs).
